Iffley People

Introduction
The following is a list of surnames from Iffley records, listed with the date or period in which they first appear.

The first lists are from the parish registers of St Mary the Virgin, Iffley, from their beginning (as a preserved record) in 1572 up to and including 1874.

We start with the burial register because it is a good record of the permanent community; the parish church offered the only place to bury the local dead until the growth of free-church burial grounds (none near Iffley until the 1830s) and the Victorian municipal cemeteries and crematoria. We have then checked the marriage registers for additional names, using those given as "of this parish" and where there is doubt giving them the benefit.

After 1850 parish registers are inadequate as a record of population. Secular records become increasingly useful. We have therefore used directories, electoral rolls, census returns and other references from 1853 until 1901. From these we have taken the names of heads of household (the lists will not include resident indoor servants, even if they stayed with one household for twenty years and became part of the local scene). Again, the names given are additional; we don't repeat any already included in the parish lists.
(See link below for Iffley People Continued for 1830 onwards.)

There are two points to note when searching.
First, St Mary the Virgin Iffley was not restricted to serving Iffley alone until the 1880s. Odd survivals of medieval parish structure gave it a second community to serve in Littlemore until 1836, and another in Cowley until 1885. The detached Cowley district was called Hockmore Street; its people sometimes used the churchway to Iffley and sometimes used their neighbouring church of St James. Littlemore before 1836 had no church of its own; most of it was a detached part of the parish of St Mary the Virgin (the university church) in Oxford High Street.

Ecclesiastical history has therefore locked the Iffley community into a wide family network. The common surnames extend in an arc from Church Cowley through Iffley and Littlemore; they appear to a lesser extent in Sandford. (They do not cross the river into South Hinksey, which is interesting.) Searchers for Iffley names should also check the registers of Cowley St James, of SS Mary and Nicholas, Littlemore and (before 1836) St Mary the Virgin, Oxford.

Second, beware common surnames. We are listing names with the date or period of their first appearance only. For example we have "Hill" first appearing in the burial registers of 1572-99. We give it then and not subsequently, although there are subsequent Hills and by the 19thc they are almost certainly new families and not descendants.
